Troubleshooting
Why a download fails — and how to fix it
These are the failures we see most often. The fix is usually one of these.
The link returns 'pin not found' or 404
Likely cause: The pin has been deleted, the creator's account has been deactivated, or the link points to a board rather than a pin.
Fix: Open the link in a private/incognito browser window. If the pin does not load there at all, the downloader cannot fetch it. Make sure you copied a pin URL, not a board or profile URL.
The download is lower resolution than expected
Likely cause: The creator uploaded the image at that size, or Pinterest only generated smaller crops for that pin.
Fix: The downloader always returns the largest file Pinterest stores for the pin. If only a 236px or 474px version exists, that is the original — there is no larger variant to fetch.
iOS Safari opens the image in a new tab instead of saving it
Likely cause: Safari on iPhone displays JPG and PNG files inline rather than triggering a download, especially for images under a certain size.
Fix: Long-press the image and choose 'Save to Photos' or 'Save to Files'. Alternatively, use the Files-app workflow described in our iPhone guide to force a download.
The downloaded file is a video, not an image
Likely cause: The pin is a video pin or animated pin, not a static image. The downloader returns whatever media type the pin contains.

Save Pinterest images the right way
Pinterest makes pin saving easy, but the file you download still belongs to whoever uploaded it. Use it for personal reference, not redistribution.
Save images you have a right to keep
Only download pin images you uploaded yourself, that are clearly public, or that the creator has explicitly allowed to be saved.
Pinterest keeps the underlying rights
Downloading an image does not transfer its copyright. Reposting someone else's pin as your own or using it commercially still requires their permission.
Save the original, not a screenshot
Screenshots re-compress the image and drop resolution. Always save the original file — on iPhone it lands in Files and moves to Photos with one Share step.
