Why a download fails — and how to fix it

These are the failures we see most often. The fix is usually one of these.

The GIF downloads as an MP4 file

Likely cause: X converts every GIF upload into a silent looping MP4 when it's posted — there is no .gif file on X's servers to fetch.

Fix: That MP4 loop is the original file. Play it anywhere, or convert it to .gif with a free converter if you specifically need the extension.

Downloaded GIF has no sound

Likely cause: Twitter GIFs are silent by design — audio is stripped during X's GIF-to-MP4 conversion at upload time.

Fix: Nothing was lost in the download. If a post has real audio it's a video, not a GIF — use the main Twitter/X video downloader for it.

'Post not found' or lookup fails

Likely cause: The post is from a protected account, was deleted, or contains no actual media (just a link card or text).

Fix: Open the link in a private browsing window. If you can't view the post logged out, no downloader can fetch it.

Share-menu link doesn't work

Likely cause: Some X share sheets append tracking parameters such as ?s=46 to the copied URL, which can interfere with the lookup.

Fix: Copy the link straight from the browser address bar, or strip everything after the status ID before pasting.
